SYNOPSIS
In this classic comedy, Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight as an arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find – too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six-day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic, Velasco, where everything that can go wrong does. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, as she sees it. He’s too staid, too boring, and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous. Running “barefoot in the park” would be a start…
The film version of this play starred Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.
CORIE BRATTER (Ages 20's)
Newlywed Corie is a free-spirited, adventurous, energetic young woman who “jumps into life.” She is deeply in love with life and with her husband, Paul. She is optimistic, romantic, spontaneous, and acts on impulse and emotion, which often leads to entertaining but chaotic situations.
PAUL BRATTER (Ages 20's)
Paul is more reserved and practical, contrasting Corie’s spontaneity. He is a lawyer who takes his job (and everything else!) very seriously and often finds himself caught between his wife’s desires for excitement and his own need for stability. A bit OCD, a bit uptight. Doesn’t really know how to let loose and have a good time. Corie jumps into life–Paul “looks first.”
ETHEL BANKS (Ages 50's+)
Mrs. Banks is Corie’s mother and a widow. She is outwardly prim and proper, but is pessimistic, a bit of a hypochondriac and is constantly on the verge of being overwhelmed. She has great difficulty adapting to new and unexpected situations, which clashes with Corie’s carefree nature, often to comic effect. Slight New York accent. Requires some physical comedy.
VICTOR VELASCO (Ages 50's-60's)
Mr. Velasco is the Bratters’ eccentric neighbor, who lives in the attic of their apartment building and shares Corie’s sense of fun and adventure. He is charming, flamboyant, a shameless flirt, a gourmet cook, has been everywhere, has met everyone, and is not concerned in the least about practical matters. He is vaguely Eastern European, perhaps with a bit of an accent. Requires some physical comedy.
HARRY PEPPER
(Ages 30's+)
Telephone repair man. Friendly, good natured, down-to-earth, working class, and always has a “dad joke” at the ready and thinks he is funnier than he actually is. He is a bit awkward, often puts his foot in his mouth but means well. Strong New York accent.
